Urban Skillz workshop

The workshop leaders | This workshop | Scheme of work | Certified qualification | Evidence of participation | Booking

The Urban Skillz team combine three of our most popular workshops and give a chance to learn three very different art forms derived from the urban music scene.

The workshop leaders

Between them, our Urban Skillz tutors have run workshops throughout the UK in places such as schools, youth clubs, alternative education centres, prisons, churches and performing arts training academies.

DJ Hoolio has 8 years experience as a DJ. He has toured internationally, DJing in some of the country’s biggest nightclubs, performing alongside the biggest names in the DJ world, and has perfected the art of scratch DJing. He has a great deal of experience in providing workshops in DJing, as well as other fields of youth work.

The MCing/Rapping course is run by Ad-Apt MC, who is a professional MC with a CV including album sales of 100,000, international performances to huge crowds and a well earned title of the most versatile MC in the game. Ad-Apt has run MCing workshops with beginners from the age of four, to professional MC's.

B-Boy Tase-T is a founding member of the Faction breakdance crew, one of the most respected groups of breakdancers in the UK. He has performed at numerous gigs and competed and won many competitions. B-Boy Tase-T runs workshops in street dancing and breakdancing and when not teaching is a professional dancer/choreographer in the UK's premier venues.

All of the Urban Skillz tutors are experienced youth workers, and all have an up to date CRB check certificate. If you have any questions about the tutors or the workshops, please don't hesitate to ask.

This workshop

In the DJing course, participants will learn how to use top of the range DJing equipment, will learn how to DJ using vinyl and state of the art MP3 DJ software. They will learn how techniques change for different genres of music. They will be taught how to beat-match, mix, and learn how to scratch. Participants will then arrange and mix their own DJ set.

Ad-Apt will teach workshop participants how to write their own lyrics, freestyle, rap and MC over different styles of music including Hip Hop, Garage, and Drum and Bass, and also how to beatbox – making music using only your mouth. Participants will be able to rap their own lyrics over different beats, and have a full piece to perform by the end of the workshop.

The Breakdance workshop will teach participants warm ups through fun activities and moves from the basics of breakdancing up to advanced skills like windmills and flares. Participants will be taught to compose performance routines from start to finish, and get the opportunity to take part in a B-Boy "circle"; where breakdancers stand in a circle in dance in the middle in a "battle" style.

Scheme of work

Principal purpose:

To teach participants all the skills involved in becoming a DJ, MC/Rapper and Breakdancer.

Benefits include:

  • Learning and performing new performance skills is a great way for participants to gain confidence, to express themselves and enjoy something new.
  • Combining three of the main forms of urban music related arts into one workshop means that participants get to try lots of different exercises and get a taste of three challenging but rewarding skills, all using very different techniques in a very creative way.
  • All the Urban Skillz tutors are committed to influencing those they work with in a positive, encouraging way, whilst passing on their skills.

Urban Skillz are more than happy to tailor workshops to your needs so if you require anything specific, then please just ask.

Highlights of the workshop:

  • Participants will learn to Mix, Scratch, Beatbox, MC, and Breakdance through lessons aimed specifically at those being taught.
  • At the end of the workshop all participants will get together and the DJing, MCing and Breakdancing students will all get the chance to perform the skills they’ve learned in the Urban Skillz showcase!

All participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn mixing and beatmatching on the DJ decks
  • Learn the techniques of scratching
  • Be taught to beatbox
  • Learn to Rap and MC over different styles of music
  • Learn to write rap lyrics
  • Learn how to warm up properly before dancing

  • Perform what they have learned in front of an audience
  • Get advice and demonstrations from professionals
  • Be creative and positively express themselves through music

Certified qualification

Top Dog Certificate of Achievement in URBAN SKILLZ

All of our workshops are accredited with a certificate that all partakers can take away with them at the end as proof of their participation and to mark their achievement in learning a new skill.

Evidence of participation

Many youth schemes require evidence of learners' participation and achievements in wider learning projects to contribute to the young persons file or CV. Top Dog support this by providing other supporting evidence of participation in addition to the Top Dog Certificate of Achievement. Available for this workshop are:

  • Worksheets
  • Photographs of activities
  • Where possible recording of DJing, MCing and beatboxing
  • Records of attendees and evaluation/feedback forms are completed by all participants
